The Old Forge Library, 220 Crosby Blvd., is hosting a series of presentations on fall Thursdays on the topics of diversity, inclusion and equity. On October 17 at 6 pm, Whole Me Inc. of Syracuse will speak about “Deaf Culture and Community”.
Hearing people often think of deafness as simply “an inability to hear.” Being deaf, though, is also about being part of a community with its own history, values, and culture. As allies of the deaf community, we will learn about misconceptions and stigmas and help promote equal treatment and inclusive behaviors.
For 20 years, WHOLE ME, Inc. has been reaching out to serve deaf and hard-of-hearing people in Central New York. They provide programs and activities that promote educational, employment and social success for deaf/hard-of-hearing children, adolescents, young adults and their families through mentoring, literacy, life skills and transitional skills training, early intervention, community service, advocacy and rights awareness.
The final presentation in the series will be held on 10/24/24 @ 5 pm. Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, of Utica will present “Helping People, Changing Lives and Ending Poverty”.
Each of the four presentations in the series is led by a regional expert to educate attendees about practices of equity and inclusion being used and practices to consider. By learning to support one another and to see beyond differences, we create stronger and more vibrant communities for everyone.
The series is generously funded by the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties. There will be refreshments following each program.
