Oneida County Master Gardener’s Herb & Flower Festival
9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at Cornell Cooperative Extension, corner of Judd and Second Street in Oriskany.
At the Festival you will enjoy garden related vendors, walks in the Parker F. Scripture Botanical Gardens, great food, and excellent advice at the Master Gardener’s booth.
Free talks are being scheduled to include the following:
10 am The Herbal Chef
(Linda Sturtevant and Pat Miller; Master Gardener Volunteers): Just what are the best herbs to use in your favorite dishes? What part of the herb should I use; leaves, flowers, or stems? Are wild herbs OK? Answer all these questions with “The Herbal Chef.”
11 am Houseplants Are Trendy
(Lisa Ballantyne; owner of Ballantyne Gardens and MGV) Learn how to care for them and how to transition your plants from outside back inside this fall. You can keep your houseplants healthy and thriving as the seasons change. Keep restful foliage at hand all year.
12 pm The Buzz About Native Plants
(Bruce Mero; Master Gardener Volunteer) Learn about our native plants with a discussion of the many attributes of the plants that have evolved in this region over the millennia and the interdependent relationships these native plants have with the insects, birds and other critters that have co-evolved alongside each other.
1pm A Great Escape in Your Own Backyard
(Natalie Carmolli; Keynote speaker, Proven Winners representative) Creating a private escape in your own backyard has become a sought-after remedy to the chaos of the outside world. The key is designing a garden that works for you, instead of the other way around! In this fun and informative program, you’ll learn just how easy it is to create a relaxing garden spot using low-maintenance shrubs and companion plants. The program incorporates small, garden-friendly cultivars, including a sneak peek of some new Proven Winners® ColorChoice® hydrangeas and roses. You’ll leave with ideas and inspiration to help you build your own backyard oasis or create peaceful pockets in your already established garden spaces.

Parker F. Scripture Botanical Gardens
The Parker F. Scripture Botanical Gardens house many educational gardens: the extensive herb gardens, the perennial gardens filled with daylilies, flowering perennial shrubs; the rose trellises, water garden, fairy garden, butterfly house, the All-American Selection gardens and the dahlia gardens, and the Hosta linear bed. A lovely pavilion offers lunch time seating, and the new Pergola in the midst of the gardens has seating as well. Food vendors are available to fill lunch time needs, and delicious Herbal pastries and Ice-cream sandwiches are among the good foods available, with shady sites to enjoy them. A Garden Scavenger hunt is planned for children and adults that will give educational gardening information and then returning the sheets to the Master Gardener booth for a raffle of a prize. The Master Gardener booth also gives out specific advice for your plant questions, pamphlets on a great variety of topics and free garden seeds from Harris Seeds. The Nature trail holds a delightful walk in the woods, with many plants identified.
Admission to the event is $4, and free for children 12 and under. Parking is available at nearby Met Life parking areas with busing to the Festival. Due to the closing of the bridge from Rt. 840, approaching from Sutcliff Rd. off of Rt. 233 is the easiest access, but otherwise do follow the detour signs for Rt. 840.
