Magic Carpet Series Statement
The center piece of storytelling in every Arab home is the large woven carpet that integrates the main sitting room with their creation myth and world view. These intricate hand-made objects are the European equivalent of formal gardens made from the sheep, camel and silk thread that was harvested and traded on the Silk Road (from 3000 BC- 1900 AD). The carpets are diverse geometric solutions to drawing images and icons that are reflective of the meaning, purpose and identity of the Arab ethnicity and culture. The imagery is broad, flora, fauna, warriors on horse-back, buildings, medallions that frame text and poetry including ritual objects. As a whole, carpets are the historical documents, encyclopedia and visual dictionary that is woven to bind the Arab tribes and enable them to survive. There is always an element of calligraphy either as text or the way growth systems are ordered. Green is an important spiritual color that reifies the concept of life, growth and nurturing. The luminous tubes are radically integrated and woven in the carpet surface. Technology wed with tradition, the raw forces of nature, growth and time.~ Daniel Buckingham
