Underground Railroad and Abolition Walking Tour
The Underground Railroad and Abolition Walking Tour Takes place on Thursday, June 15th, 2023 beginning at the Adirondack Bank Bldg Parking lot near Bleecker Street.
Led by Jan DeAmicis and Mary Hayes Gordon, this will be gentle walk, suitable for all ages. Local Underground Railroad history & Utica’s role in the national Abolition Movement.
The Underground Railroad was part of the abolitionist movement to eliminate slavery in America. In the state of New York, organized abolitionism began in Oneida County in the early 1830s. Local activists were inspired by the words and examples of Beriah Green and his students at the Oneida Institute. By the Fall of 1835 there were 17 anti-slave societies throughout Oneida County. Soon there were many Underground Railroad stations as well.
About Oneida County Freedom Trail
Oneida County Freedom Trail Commission has been actively studying the Underground Railroad in Oneida County, New York since its first meeting of February 10, 2001.
It was organized in part as a response to an initiative from the Federal National Park Service to identify and preserve sites and develop information concerning the Underground Railroad nationwide. In 1997 Governor Pataki signed the New York State Freedom Trail Program Act to promote this initiative. Every county in the state is encouraged to organize a commission to study its local Underground Railroad.
