“The Dancer and the Dance” exhibit preview at The Smithy November 7
Companion exhibit to Glimmerglass Film Days features works by Jenny Riffle, Zelda Smith, and Georgia b. Smith
Cooperstown, NY- The new exhibit “The Dancer and the Dance” opens Saturday, November 7 with a Preview Party from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at The Smithy in Cooperstown.
Featuring works by Jenny Riffle, Zelda Smith, and Georgia b. Smith, “The Dancer and the Dance” explores time and materiality through sculpture, dance, narrative, and photography. The preview includes an Artists’ Talk at 5:30 pm.
Curated by artist Megan Adams Irving and gallerist Sydney L. Waller, the exhibit is part of Glimmerglass Film Days, which runs November 11-15 with independent films, filmmaker talks, parties, and events in multiple Cooperstown locations.
“Art speaks with a different voice than a documentary or feature film, so I hope this work—with its material and thematic shifts—will create a connection or new understanding for the Film Days audience members,” said Irving. “Working with these three artists, who all live and work in Otsego County, is a real honor. They fill the space with their wide range of work, so there is humor, humanity, and beauty to find throughout the show.”
Jenny Riffle is an artist and photographer based in New York. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally, and she has been featured in, and photographed for, numerous publications worldwide including WIRED, Time Lightbox, The Independent, The Guardian and the New York Times. A book of her collaborative self-portraits Its’ Raining…I Love You was published in 2020 by Minor Matters Books.
Zelda Smith is an interdisciplinary artist whose sculptures and performances explore ephemerality and the agency of objects. Her practice draws on a background in ceramics, dance, and earth architecture, using materials that melt, erode, deform, and transform over time.
Georgia b. Smith is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in dance and architectural fabrication. Her work has been exhibited by the Flint Institute of the Arts in Michigan, Gallery 495 in New York City, Under the Roof in London, and the University of Tokyo in Japan, among other places.
Georgia b. Smith and Zelda Smith’s collaborative work won “Best in Show” at Artificial Horizons, a robotic-art show in Detroit. Recently, both Smiths served as Visiting Artists at SUNY Oneonta and Lehigh University.
The exhibit will be on view during Film Days November 12-15, 12 pm to 5 pm, and other times November 7-15, by appointment, by calling or texting 315/941-9607. There will be a Coffee with the Artists on Sunday, November 15 at 4:30 pm, just before the Film Days Closing Film DEREK VS DEREK, which will be shown at the National Baseball Hall of Fame Grandstand Theater at 5:30 pm.
The Smithy is located at 55 Pioneer Street in Cooperstown. For more information on the exhibit and the full Film Days schedule, please see glimmerglassfilmdays.org.
