THE CITY OF AMSTERDAM HOLDING A PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE & COMPREHENSIVE PLAN COMMITTEE PUBLIC HEARING!
Residents and stakeholders invited to attend to review and provide feedback on the City’s Preliminary Draft of the 2026 Comprehensive Plan Update.
The City of Amsterdam invites all residents and stakeholders to review and provide feedback on the City’s Preliminary 2026 Comprehensive Plan Update Draft by participating in a Public Open House on Thursday, March 5th from 5:30PM to 7:00PM. The event will take place in person at Amsterdam City Hall (61 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010).
The Open House will include a poster gallery through which attendees can review and provide feedback on the Preliminary Draft Comprehensive Plan at their leisure. Members of the consultant team, City Staff, and the Comprehensive Plan Committee will be available to answer questions and discuss the plan elements. Attendees are welcome to come and go as their schedule allows.
At 7:00 PM, a presentation and Public Hearing will be held by the Comprehensive Plan Committee in Council Chambers. NYS General City Law requires the Committee to hold a Public Hearing on the Draft Comprehensive Plan prior to issuing a formal recommendation of action to the Common Council. Please note that this is NOT the final Public Hearing for this project, as at least one more will be held by the Common Council during the formal review and adoption process.
The Preliminary 2026 Comprehensive Plan Update Draft is available for review on the project website (www.amsterdamny.gov/326/Comprehensive-Plan-Update) and upon request during normal business hours at the City of Amsterdam’s Community and Economic Development Department Office located at 61 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
Members of the public may attend either or both the Open House and Public Hearing to provide comments on the Draft Plan. You may also submit written or emailed comments to the City’s Department of Community and Economic Development. All input obtained at this stage, regardless of format, will be recorded in the public record and given consideration.
About this Project:
The City received a Smart Growth Planning Grant from New York State to complete an update to its 2003 Comprehensive Plan and build upon the momentum of other successful efforts, such as the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). The updated plan will identify key goals, strategies, and actions to guide future sustainable growth within the municipality, enhance the local cultural identity, and protect natural and cultural local resources.
The City firmly believes public engagement is a critical step to ensuring the updated plan reflects the current values and priorities of the community. Your participation is needed to help shape the plan and guide future decision-making and investment.
Funding for this project is provided by the New York State Smart Growth Program.
