Corn and Soybean Seed Treatment Field Day at SUNY Cobleskill

Event hosted by Cornell and SUNY Cobleskill will provide farmers and Ag industry stakeholders with research updates and information on neonicotinoid regulation

Registration Deadline: Jul 14, 2025

Cobleskill, NY – In preparation for the upcoming implementation of the Birds and Bees Protection Act, which will restrict the use of neonicotinoid-treated corn, soybean, and wheat seed in New York beginning in 2029, Cornell Integrated Pest Management (Cornell IPM), in collaboration with Cornell University, and Cornell Cooperative Extension, has announced a Field Day co-sponsored and hosted by SUNY Cobleskill.

Designed to provide growers, crop consultants, certified crop advisors, industry representatives, crop managers and policymakers with timely information on the legislation and current research efforts, this event will highlight preliminary research findings from ongoing statewide trials and introduce the development of a seed pest risk assessment tool designed to guide pest management decisions in the absence of neonicotinoid treatments.

Largest on-farm research and demonstration project in Cornell IPM’s history

Supported by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, this initiative represents the largest on-farm research and demonstration project in Cornell IPM’s history. With participation from over 80 corn and soybean growers across the state, the project will determine where and when there is a significant risk of pest damage; aid in the development and deployment of a seed pest risk assessment tool; and test and demonstrate IPM alternatives, including the viability of not using insecticide seed treatments.

This work is a proactive step to support New York’s growers as they prepare for the transition mandated by the Birds and Bees Protection Act, ensuring that agricultural productivity and environmental stewardship go hand in hands.
