Unplug and Play at 3rd Annual First Day Hike hosted by Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site

Fort Hunter, NY – Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will host its 3rd Annual First Day Hike starting at 1:00PM on January 1st, 2026. This short, mostly flat hike along the historic Erie Canal will be a mile and a half loop from the Visitor Center, 129 Schoharie Street, in Fort Hunter.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation encourages all New Yorkers to Unplug and Play by taking a First Day Hike to welcome in the New Year. This “easy” rated hike on the towpath trails at Schoharie Crossing is a great way to celebrate together with family and friends.

The hike will be followed by a marshmallow roast. Weather could modify the hike or the marshmallow roast. Blizzard conditions or lightening would cancel both. Snow on the ground may change the hike to a snowshoe with less distance or require traction aids. Please bring water and snacks and anything else you want on a hike including all of your New Year’s resolutions! Well behaved dogs are welcome on a short leash, controlled and cleaned up after. Montgomery County public health law requires rabies vaccination.

Meet at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site Visitor Center, 129 Schoharie St., Fort Hunter, NY 12069. No registration required.
