Little Falls History to be Explored in Presentation at Schoharie Crossing

Fort Hunter, NY – The Friends of Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will host Little Falls Historian, Patricia Stock, on Tuesday, July 22nd at 6:30pm to present on the lively history of that canal community in the Mohawk Valley.

Little Falls, a city of roughly 4,600 residents in New York’s Herkimer County, is distinguished by its historical ties to the Erie Canal and its beautiful natural setting in the Mohawk Valley. European settlement began in 1723 with Palatine Germans, and the city officially incorporated in 1896. The Mohawk River and Erie Canal flow through the city, dividing it into northern and southern sections. Located near Utica and the Adirondack Mountains, Little Falls offers both a sense of small-town charm and opportunities for outdoor recreation.

The city’s connection to the Erie Canal is evident in its various canal-related activities and attractions. Architecturally, Little Falls showcases a variety of historic buildings, including former manufacturing facilities lining the canal. Beyond the waterfalls, parks and access to the surrounding Mohawk Valley and Adirondack Mountains provide ample opportunities for outdoor activities. The atmosphere is known for being friendly and the scenery charming.

Patricia Stock is a very active member of her community. She organizes numerous annual events, including Little Falls Canal Days Parade and Car Show – for more than 35 years. She has served as City of Little Falls Historian for the last nine years and is the director with the Little Falls and Herkimer County Historical Societies. Stock received the Woman of Distinction award from Senator Walczyk in 2023.
