Local History and stories Series to feature Rev. Noel Sherry and the Great Nelson Lake Train Wreck

On Thursday, August 28, at 5 pm, the Old Forge Library, located at 220 Crosby Blvd., will host the final session of the Local History and Stories series.

The lecture will feature Rev. Noel Sherry presenting “The Great Nelson Lake Train Wreck”

The wreck occurred on May 9, 1903, between the McKeever and Minnehaha Stations on New York Central Railroad’s Adirondack line, also known as the Mohawk and Malone. Railroad authorities and historians called it the most severe collision that ever occurred on the Mohawk and Malone.

Rev. Sherry is a dedicated Adirondack historian with a deep passion for the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

A lifelong hiker and sailing enthusiast, he is part-owner of a log cabin on Twitchell Lake in Big Moose, New York. Noel has pastored and taught in Massachusetts and is actively involved in the History Committee, working to preserve and document the rich story of Twitchell Lake. His well-researched and engaging articles, more than 20, have been featured in the New York Almanack and Adirondack Almanack, contributing valuable insights to the understanding of Adirondack history.

Presented by the Town of Webb Historical Association, the Local History and Stories series has showcased a new speaker each week this summer, each sharing fascinating local tales. Events include a presentation followed by an informal discussion.
