Sandy Schuman to perform at the 33rd Annual Not Just for Kids Storytelling

Fort Hunter, NY – The Friends of Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will host Sandy Schuman on Sunday, July 27th at 6:00pm to kick off the 33rd Annual Not Just for Kids Storytelling series at Schoharie Crossing. He will be weaving tales and spinning yarns during the performance titled, “200 Years on the Legendary Erie Canal: A Bicentennial Tribute.”

On July 27th, Sandy Schuman tells the story of Red McCarthy, the “Paul Bunyan of the Erie Canal,” who always told the truth, even if he had to lie to do it.

His retelling of Walter Edmund’s short story, “At Schoharie Crossing” will keep you on the edge of your seat. In “A Tribute to Sal” you’ll appreciate the real meaning of Thomas Allen’s 1912 song, “Low Bridge: Everybody Down,” aka, “The Erie Canal Song.”

Schuman tells stories about songs and songwriters, personal adventures, historical sagas, folk tales, and stories in the Jewish storytelling tradition. He is fascinated by familiar things and their unfamiliar stories. He brings folk tales and historical sagas to life and reveals the little-known stories behind some of our best-known songs. When you hear him play the guitar and sing, you’ll know why he calls himself a storyteller.

Other Not Just for Kids Storytelling programs happen at 6:00pm on:

  • August 10th, Perry Ground performs “Stories from the People of the Longhouse.
  • September 7th, Siri Allison will perform “Decisions, Decisions” and on
  • September 28th, Linda McKenney will share stories big and small.

These programs are free family fun. Refreshments will be available. This program is held outside the Visitor Center on Schoharie Street, Fort Hunter. Bring your own chair. Poor weather may move the performance inside the Enders House, adjacent to the Visitor Center.
