The Old Forge Library, 220 Crosby Blvd., invites the public to a free, informative and accessible talk, “Steel: What Is It? How Is It Made? Some Interesting Applications,” on Thursday, September 18 at 5 pm.

The speaker, Ed Szekeres, brings decades of experience and insider knowledge from a lifetime career in the steel industry.

Ed spent 23 years as a research engineer at U.S. Steel, where his job was to find better, more efficient ways to make steel, a material at the heart of modern life. After leaving U.S. Steel, he continued his work in the field as an independent consultant, advising on steelmaking processes across the industry.

During his talk, Ed will explain, in simple, non-technical terms, what steel is (and how it’s different from iron), how it’s made, and share some interesting ways steel is used in everyday life. No science background is needed, just a curious mind!

Ed Szekeres studied welding engineering at Ohio State University, and metallurgy at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY. He now enjoys summers at Twitchell Lake, and is a familiar face to many in the area through Shirley’s Somethings Old and New on Main Street in Old Forge. He also resides part-time in Utica.

Join us for this engaging, down-to-earth presentation that will leave you with a better understanding of one of the world’s most essential materials.
