Mohawk Valley Small Business Focus: Main Street Mercantile

Mohawk Valley Today loves to help create connections between people and the resources available in our area. Highlighting small businesses and organizations in our region is part of our mission. We do this to let residents and visitors know where they can find what they may need. With so many community resources located throughout the valley, we’re just getting started!

This week’s featured Mohawk Valley Small Business focus is Main Street Mercantile located in Little Falls, NY.

Main Street Mercantile is owned and operated by local Mohawk Valley resident and artist, Alexandra Tamburro. The shop located in Little Falls, sells original photography, poetry, and handmade goods created by local artists. It’s a space for residents and visitors alike to learn more about the arts and the community!

About Main Street Mercantile

My grandma is one of the greatest inspirations for Main Street Mercantile. The flower in the logo is Lily of the Valley, which is one of her favorite flowers and scents. When I was a young girl, I would often crawl in bed with my grandparents at night and wake to the smell of her Lily of the Valley perfume. I would spend the day at their shop, Gil’s, at Fay’s Mall in Ilion. I’d ride my tricycle around and visit all of the vendors. Sniff the different flavors of tobacco. Press the leftover dust from key making between my fingers because it looked like glitter. When the day was done, I’d make her kick off her heels, put her feet up, and tell her to “belax.” We liked to relax and eat pomegranates. The flower is special to me and reminds me of where I come from. A symbol of connection between past, present, and future.

In their own words

This space has deep meaning for me and I hope when you walk in you feel at home. More than anything, I want to see our area do well. I want the people who live here, as well as visitors, to have a beautiful space they can visit to treat themselves, a loved one, or a stranger. A space to learn more about the arts, more about yourself, and more about each other. Community and connection.

Keep believing in yourself and each other.

With love,

The Valley

Did you know…

Before Main Street Mercantile, the space was known as Beauty and the Beach Salon. It took one year to renovate the shop with the help of family and friends. August 2025 will mark three years being open. The counter came from the old train station in Little Falls and all the original details were kept.

Alexandra is an artist and  photographer and her work was recently presented in a gallery showing at the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts in Little Falls.

Quote from Lupita Hernandez: “I sashayed into this shop while on vacation in central NY. The space is beautiful, warm, and inviting. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for a ceiling, four walls, and a floor to embrace you then please walk through that door. The ambiance is like a giant hug. The space has a lot to offer. Art is displayed in various forms throughout. Stained glass pieces, pottery, books, soaps, candles, prints, etc. If you’re looking for unique gift ideas, conversation pieces, or simply a good chat then definitely stop by. Every piece has a story, and the shop owner would love nothing more than to share them with you. She’s a creator. She’s a collaborator. She’s a photographer. You’ll want to learn about the many hats her shop will wear. She’ll leave you impressed, make you laugh, and you will definitely want to stop by again. She’s a masterpiece! Northern hospitality is a thing y’all. Keep Little Falls weird. Support your local businesses.”
