It’s the Mohawk Valley’s best time of year for fresh produce

While we’ve been enjoying farmers’ markets and farm stores all summer, this time of the year gives all of us living in the Mohawk Valley a chance to enjoy the bounty from seasonal harvests before the first frost. Love dishes made with fresh zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, corn, and more? Now’s the time to enjoy all that the valley offers. In just a couple of weeks, we’ll welcome this year’s Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival followed by another regional favorite, the Little Falls Cheese Festival coming in early October. As always, lots to look forward to!

Looking for fresh produce? Here are some great options

Food Co-ops

A local food co-op is just like a grocery store but it is owned by folks in the community (and by you, if you choose). Unlike corporate brand grocery stores, food co-ops are totally independent and owned by the community members who shop there. They offer lots of fresh produce along with so much more. Take a look at some area co-ops.

  3. Community Co-op, Little Falls, NY. Visit them on Facebook.
  4. Richfield Springs Co-op, Richfield Springs, NY. Visit them on Facebook.

Farmers’ Markets

Farmers’ markets are another easy way to get fresh produce close to home. The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County Veggie Van offers a fantastic mobile market program that brings fresh produce to multiple communities in Herkimer County. With all of the farmers’ markets in our region, you’re only a short drive away.

Local Farm Stores

Mohawk Valley farm stands and farm stores provide another great opportunity for us to buy directly from local farmers and producers. You might be surprised to find a farm stand within a few minutes from your house. Many area farm stores and farm stands make it easy to purchase their produce, but it’s always a good idea to check or call ahead.

We continue to add local farm stores and farm stands to our growing list, so if you know of one that we should include, let us know.
