By 1855, the factory employed over 300 workers, making it the largest employer in Frankfort at the time (herkimer.nygenweb.net). The factory’s success contributed to Frankfort’s reputation as a key industrial center in the Mohawk Valley. In 1893, the Gates Match Factory merged with the Diamond Match Company, and operations were moved to Oswego to be closer to suppliers. Today, a monument in Frankfort commemorates the founding of the match factory, preserving its legacy in the community’s history.

The Village of Frankfort, located in Herkimer County along the scenic Mohawk River and historic Erie Canal, boasts a rich and vibrant history dating back to the early 1800s.

Officially incorporated in 1863, the village is named after early settler, Lawrence (Lewis) Frank. Frankfort grew steadily as a canal-side community during the expansion of the Erie Canal, which played a vital role in the village’s early development.

The village became home to a diverse mix of immigrants who brought with them strong traditions, craftsmanship, and a sense of community that still defines Frankfort today.

With the rise of industry and transportation along the canal and nearby railroad, Frankfort flourished as a hub of commerce, agriculture, and manufacturing. Historic buildings, quiet neighborhoods, and longtime family businesses reflect the resilience and pride of our past. From early canal boat operators to generations of local entrepreneurs, the people have always shaped our story, and continue to do so. Today, the village is home to a welcoming and resilient population that values its deep roots while embracing opportunities for the future. Whether you’re walking along the old towpaths of the canal, visiting a local landmark, or simply enjoying the view of the Mohawk Valley hills, the history of Frankfort is always close by and woven into every street, story, and smile.
