Rulison Honey Farms Named Montgomery County Small Business of the Month
Celebrating Four Generations of Beekeeping and Local Agriculture in the Town of Florida
FLORIDA, NY — Montgomery County has named Rulison Honey Farms its Small Business of the Month, recognizing the farm’s legacy of family tradition, agricultural innovation, and commitment to high-quality local products.
A Multigenerational Farm
Founded in 1893, Rulison Honey Farms has been passed down through four generations of the Rulison family. What began as a few hives in the backyard has grown into a regional operation with over 1,200 hives across the Mohawk Valley, producing raw and unfiltered honey, pollinating New York’s diverse crops, and distributing products to customers across the Northeast.
“Rulison Honey Farms represents everything we celebrate about Montgomery County,” said County Executive Pete Vroman. “This is a family-run business that has stood the test of time while continuing to grow and adapt. Their success is rooted in tradition, quality, and service—not just to their customers, but to the land and community around them.”
With a strong online presence, local partnerships, and a growing line of specialty honey products, the farm has blended tradition with modern business practices, expanding its reach while staying grounded in its values.
“Rulison Honey is a reminder that agriculture is not just part of our economy—it’s part of our identity,” said Ken Rose, Director of the Montgomery County Business Development Center. “The Rulison family’s dedication to their craft and to the people they serve has made them a pillar of our agricultural community. We’re proud to recognize their continued success.”
Beekeepers for almost 130 years
The Rulison family’s deep connection to beekeeping spans nearly 130 years, with each generation passing down knowledge, values, and a love for the bees. Today, the farm is led by Mark, Ben and Matthew Rulison, as well as two of the longest tenured employees, Timothy Stears and Donald Overbaugh. They entire operation continues to build on the previous legacy with a focus on sustainability, education, and top-quality products.
“We’re honored to be recognized by Montgomery County,” said Ben Rulison. “This farm has been a part of our family for generations, and we’re proud to keep producing quality honey and bee products right here in the Town of Florida. We appreciate the support from the community and look forward to what’s ahead.”
