Local History: Dr. James Spencer
The Old Forge Library, located at 220 Crosby Blvd., invites the public to the final program in the Town of Webb Historical Association’s Local History series on Thursday, August 27, at 5 pm.
This free summer series has featured engaging presentations and discussions exploring the region’s history, conservation, culture, and stories, while encouraging residents and visitors to share their own memories and experiences.
The series will conclude with Dr. James Spencer’s presentation, The Salem Witch Stories, an illustrated talk that brings modern science to one of America’s most infamous chapters, the 1692 Salem Witch Trials.
What really happened in Salem? Dr. Spencer will explore how historians, anthropologists, toxicologists, and forensic scientists use modern scientific methods to revisit long-standing questions and examine competing explanations surrounding the events of 1692.
Designed for curious minds of all ages and backgrounds, the presentation is a fascinating look at science in action, using careful observation, measurement, evidence, and reasoning to better understand this complex human drama. This program offers a thought-provoking look at how modern science can shed new light on forgotten stories, whether you are a history buff, a science enthusiast, or simply curious about the mysteries of the past.
Dr. Spencer is a distinguished professor, educator, and scientific leader whose career has bridged the disciplines of chemistry, forensic science, and national security. During nearly four decades of academic and administrative service at Syracuse University, he has played a pivotal role in advancing interdisciplinary research, high-impact teaching, and national scientific leadership.
