Local History: Eric Sutherland, Maple Sugaring
The Old Forge Library, located at 220 Crosby Blvd., invites the public to the next program in the Town of Webb Historical Association’s Local History series, held Thursdays throughout the summer. This free series features engaging presentations and discussions exploring the region’s rich history, conservation, culture, and storytelling, while encouraging residents and visitors alike to share their own memories and experiences.
The series continues on Thursday, August 20, at 5 p.m. with a presentation by Eric Sutherland on Commercial Maple Syrup Operations in the Adirondacks.
Sutherland is the owner of Maple Moss Sugarworks in Inlet NY, a commercial maple syrup operation he founded in 2019. Like many Adirondack locals, his introduction to sugaring began in childhood, making maple syrup with his family in the spring. Years later, after a friend with a large sugaring operation pointed out the potential of his maple-rich property, Sutherland decided to give commercial maple production a try.
Today, he considers maple sugaring his “fun job,” while working professionally as a landscaper and caretaker. During his presentation, Sutherland will share the history, traditions, and realities of operating a modern commercial maple syrup business in the Adirondacks.
The last session in the history series will take place on August 27 when James Spencer will present The Salem Witch Stories.
The Local History series is free and open to the public, offering an engaging opportunity to explore Adirondack history while celebrating the stories, people, and heritage that have shaped the region.
