Fly Creek Walking Tour to highlight architecture and community

Otsego 2000 to present Walking Tour of Fly Creek
Cooperstown, NY – Otsego 2000 will offer a walking tour of Fly Creek on Sunday, July 13 at 3 pm. The tour will be led by Dr. Cindy Falk, Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies at SUNY Oneonta and Professor of Material Culture at the University’s Cooperstown Graduate Program. The tour will highlight the history of Fly Creek and the community spaces that enlivened the hamlet over the years.
“After exploring Fly Creek south of State Highway 28/80 last summer, it was clear we needed to return to Fly Creek again this year to look at the north side. Many of Fly Creek’s community spaces – post office, school, Methodist church, general store – will be the subject on this year’s tour,” said Falk. “The tour asks participants to consider where and how community was fostered in the past and asks how we can continue to make community connections today.”
The cost for the walking tour is $10. Register in advance at otsego2000.org or by calling 607/547-8881. This walking tour was researched and designed by students Jack Beemsterboer and Emma Haring in Dr. Falk’s Historic Preservation class at the Cooperstown Graduate Program.
The Otsego 2000 Historic Preservation Series continues with walking tours in Hartwick on August 10, Roseboom on September 7, Middlefield on October 19, and Cooperstown on November 16.
Dr. Falk was co-editor of Buildings & Landscapes: The Journal of the Vernacular Architecture Forum for five years and is the author of Barns of New York: Rural Architecture of the Empire State.
