Thursday Local History and Stories Series

The Old Forge Library, 220 Crosby Blvd., invites the public to the next presentation in the Town of Webb Historical Association’s Local History Series, held Thursdays throughout the summer. The free series features engaging presentations and discussions exploring the region’s rich history, conservation, culture, and storytelling while encouraging residents and visitors alike to share their own memories and experiences.

The series continues on Thursday, August 6, at 5 pm with “The White Plague and Adirondack Tourism,” presented by Dr. Tom Welch.

Welch’s presentation tells the fascinating story of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau, who founded a tuberculosis sanitarium in Saranac Lake in 1885. Attendees will learn how Trudeau’s pioneering work transformed the village into the world’s leading destination for tuberculosis treatment and helped fuel the growth of the Saranac Lake region as a thriving tourist destination.

In addition to his career as an academic pediatrician, Dr. Welch is an amateur historian specializing in early Adirondack history. An experienced backcountry guide and outdoor educator, he provides instruction in wilderness safety and outdoor skills while also consulting on ropes course operation and facilitation. The Local History Series continues throughout the summer with a diverse lineup of speakers and topics:

The Local History Series is free and open to the public, offering an engaging opportunity to discover the people, places, and events that have shaped the Adirondacks. No registration is required.
