Featured Mohawk Valley Artist: Justin Como

The Mohawk Valley is fortunate to have a thriving community of artists living in our region. These artists are active in cities, towns and villages throughout in every corner of our six counties. They showcase their work and participate in events that do so much to uplift us in ways we didn’t realize we needed. One such artist is Justin Como.

Justin Como is a visual artist living in the Mohawk Valley.

His practice makes use of installation, ceramic sculpture, and drawing. He has exhibited artwork in New York, California, Ohio, Mississippi, and Australia.

“My most recent work explores the spatial relationships of body and environment. “Where does one body end and another begin?” is my operative question. I aim to examine awareness through interactions between body, object, and space by turning spectator into participant or performer.”

Como received his BFA from the State University of New York at Oswego (2004) and an MFA in Sculpture and Expanded Practice from Ohio University (2012). He has taught at Ohio University and Mississippi Valley State University. Como is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Herkimer County Community College.

Como’s art practice explores the interior and exterior spaces a body inhabits. He aims to create artwork within the threshold of those spaces.

“My goal is to disperse artwork through the agency of others; viewers become touchers, motion makers, creating ripples that radiate and fold in to the experiences of others.”

Justin is a community artist who has volunteered with The Art Thing Collaborative. He served as the lead artist for the mural event at the Stone Soup American Bistro and Herb Garden in Herkimer, NY.

Justin Como is accepting commissions for illustrations and sculpture. More of his artwork and contact information can be viewed at: justincomo.com or Instagram @forever_exhaling.

“The Stone Soup Community mural was a real community and collaborative effort, but Como was the head chef here. Between Como’s schedule teaching full time at HCC and my other job Sundays were really about the only day we could make the magic happen. He put in a lot of long hours, donating all those Sundays of his time to bring the wall to life. He was hands on through the whole thing. He came up with the design, and when it came down to the painting he was always right there, encouraging artists such as myself and offering up direction and guidance when needed.“

“Justin took the reins and did a great job facilitating the mural. His exceptional talent and positive nature gave the project a carefree, enjoyable flow, while still ensuring the mural was completed on time. He brings that mix of fun and personality, while maintaining professionalism and I think all of the artists and everyone at TAT really appreciate that.”

“I had the pleasure of getting to know Justin when we brought Art War to HCC, and both myself and Carly knew he’d be exactly the kind of artist that could lead up a community mural. He brings that natural flair for teaching, but he’s one of these artists who remains open and curious, who doesn’t stop learning.”
