GLOVERSVILLE, NY — For the first time in nearly four decades, sanctioned regional boxing is returning to the Gloversville and Fulton County area. On Saturday, April 11, 2026, the Bobby Stewart Tournament of Champions will take place at SUNY-FMCC, marking a major milestone in the city’s ongoing community and wellness revitalization.

The event is hosted by Glove City Sluggers Boxing Club, a non-profit member of USA Boxing. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit Glove City Sluggers, supporting their mission to provide local youth with a vital outlet for physical fitness, mental resilience, and character development.

The tournament is named in honor of Amsterdam native “Irish” Bobby Stewart, the 1974 National Amateur Light Heavyweight Champion. Stewart is famously credited with discovering Mike Tyson while working as a counselor at the Tryon Residential Center. Following Stewart’s original mentorship code, the Glove City Sluggers program requires academic achievement and accountability from its trainees, ensuring that the sport serves as a tool for life-long success.

The Featured Event

Go For It Fitness and Glove City Sluggers Boxing founder and Gloversville native Jarrod Johnson will step out of his coaching role and into the ring. In addition to the local competitor, there will be an estimated 15 total bouts for the event featuring athletes from throughout the Adirondack Region, as well as another Gloversville representative, Fighter Cody Stone.

Jarrod Johnson

Jarrod Johnson

Since 2016, Jarrod Johnson has logged over 15,000 hours of Personal Training to date and countless hours of nutrition, lifestyle and wellness coaching at his Go For It Fitness & Personal Training Studio of 7-11 Church Street Downtown Gloversville. Specializing in senior fitness and exercise therapy, Johnson has built a “judgment-free zone” that serves as the foundation for the Glove City Sluggers program. The boxing club provides an essential safe haven for local youth, teaching technical skills alongside lessons in respect, mental clarity, and accountability.

Jarrod Johnson is trading his coaching whistle for boxing gloves for this anticipated event. Beyond supporting the local youth program, Johnson views this fight as a metaphor for the universal struggles we all face. Whether the hurdles are physical or psychological, Johnson believes the preparation is where the true growth happens. As he puts it: “Your biggest opponent is you.” By stepping into the spotlight, he aims to show that anyone can find the inner strength to tackle their personal battles.
