It’s blueberry picking time in Herkimer County
This past weekend, we treated ourselves to picking blueberries at Herkimer Blueberries located at 1080 Steuben Hill Road just outside of Herkimer, NY. With stunning views looking over the Mohawk Valley surrounded by the sweet smell of blueberries, we were in our own little version of heaven. It was important for us to get there as early as we could so we could get plenty of blueberries before the temperature got too hot. There are so many berries ripe on the bushes right now which made picking fast and super fun!
Continuing a long-time legacy
Speaking with the owners who purchased Herkimer Blueberries about two years ago from Al Wereczek who is in his late 90s, they are proud to continue the farm’s legacy spanning about 40 years. We learned that the parcel of land where we got to pick used to be a lake back in the 1800s and Mirror lake today is all what remains of the lake that was once there.
We’re here to give back to our community. We don’t spray the berries because we want to offer the best fresh fruit. We care about local families and want to provide the best experience for everyone.
Grab a bucket when you check in and get picking!
Upon arriving, you’ll be greeted warmly by the new owners, and Stella, of course, their friendly puppy. They’ll provide the buckets for picking and if you ask, they’ll point you in the right direction for picking. We asked where we should pick and were told to head to the back corner and we stayed there for the duration picking about 15 pounds of blueberries!
You can also buy blueberries by the quart at their stand, so if you don’t have time to pick, be sure to stop by and get some quarts of fresh blueberries for snacking or to use in your favorite recipes.
Be sure to tell Stella we said, “Hi!”
