Mohawk Valley Data Center planned for Ilion, NY
Former Remington Arms location for planned 200MW AI Data center
Recent news reports on WKTV.com and Syracuse.com both highlighting data center plans for the former Remington Arms location at 14 Hoefler Ave in Ilion. According to WKTV.com,
“The company intends to clean up the site and construct a 250,000-square-foot AI data center as the primary post-remediation use.
The project schedule outlined in the application shows key milestones, including state review and public comment periods throughout 2026 and 2027.”
The Data Center Map includes the former Remington Arms location at 14 Hoefler Avenue in Ilion detailing, “a 200MW data center campus is planned for the former Remington Arms factory site in llion, New York, involving environmental cleanup and redevelopment of the 32-acre property.”
According to Congress.gov, “Roughly 100 MW of electric power is sufficient to support the electricity needs of 80,000 U.S. households.” Using this as a guide, it is estimated that the power consumption for the planned data center in Ilion is the equivalent of 160,000 households. To compare this to the Mohawk Valley, there are approximately 185,140 households across all six counties that make up this region. This estimate is based on the NYS Office of Special Comptroller’s Special Report: Mohawk Valley Region (July 2018) data indicating 2.63 people per household along with 2020 population census data for the Mohawk Valley Region’s six counties. The report by WKTV.com states, “The redevelopment plan does not include renewable energy facilities” to offset this power consumption.
Local residents respond to the Mohawk Valley data center plan for Ilion
The Ilion data center has the attention of nearby residents with a Facebook post dated April 19, 2026, asking the question, “Should a massive AI data center be built in the Mohawk Valley?” The Facebook post goes on to say, “Our community is facing a major decision about the former Remington Arms site, and many of us have real concerns about what a massive AI data center could mean for the Mohawk Valley. Energy strain, water usage for cooling, noise—these aren’t small issues for towns already dealing with a lot.”
The Facebook post goes on to say, “Right now, we’re asking officials to pause, do a full review of the environmental and infrastructure impact, and actually include all our communities in the planning. Has anyone else been thinking about this? Does it feel like this is moving too fast?”
The April 19 post on Facebook as well as a Nextdoor.com post (dated April 22, 2026), are both linked to a Change.org petition asking supporters to oppose the data center. The petition states,
“We, the residents of the Mohawk Valley—including Ilion, Herkimer, Mohawk, Frankfort, and surrounding communities—are deeply concerned about the proposed artificial intelligence data center at the former Remington Arms site.”
The petition asks local and state officials to put a pause on the development of this project and to, “Conduct a full, transparent environmental and infrastructure impact review” and “actively include all surrounding communities in decision-making.”
As of May 11, 2026, the Change.org petition has garnered 1,262 signatures.
