Fall Foliage Changes Begin
This week marks the first official week of the fall foliage tracking by I Love NY with an excerpt from their second report:
New York State’s gradual transition from the greens of summer to the multi-colored kaleidoscope of fall continues this weekend, with a few locations in the Adirondacks approaching midpoint of leaf transition, and areas from Long Island to Western New York beginning to see their first significant color changes. – I♥️NY Fall foliage Report
Living Through the Seasons
One of the many benefits of being in the Mohawk Valley is being part of the seasons throughout the year. Each change of season shows us the wonders of the life cycles of all the plants, animals and wildlife in the Mohawk Valley. We are part of this seasonal cycle with the changes of the seasons guiding our lives as well. The leaves changing color as well as the lowering temps are visual and physical indicators of the change of season.
Autumn is a wonderful time of the year to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Mohawk Valley. The landscape changes from green to yellow, brilliant orange and bright red throughout the Mohawk Valley.
Take in the Mohawk Valley Fall Foliage
Here are just a few ways to take in the scenic beauty of the Mohawk Valley.
Adirondack Railroad
This is a very enjoyable way to relax and let someone else do the driving while you get to stare out the window to enjoy the scenic views. Take the Adirondack Railroad from Utica Union Station to Thendara near Old Forge. The scenic train ride is one to remember. The Adirondack Railroad offers several different schedules, destinations and departure times. Be sure to visit their website to book your scenic railway trip today.
Adirondack Rail Bike Adventures
After taking the Adirondack Railroad to Thendara Station, you can extend your tour with Adirondack Rail Bike Adventures. These tours leave out of Thendara station and typically last 2 hours round trip. Each bike carries 4 riders along the rails through the scenic forests.

Fulton County
Fulton County foliage spotters at Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center in Northville are predicting 10% change by the weekend, with muted dark-red and yellow leaves just beginning to appear.
Herkimer County
Herkimer County foliage spotters in Old Forge predict foliage may reach midpoint of change with up to 40% transition dominated by dark reds and burgundy, along with some yellow, gold and emerging orange. There is still a significant number of green leaves. southern Herkimer County foliage spotters in Herkimer predict up to 20% foliage change with some muted yellow and orange leaves.
Oneida County
Oneida County reports from Utica expect a little over 5% transition, with yellow leaves of average brilliance just beginning to appear.
Montgomery, Otsego, and Schoharie Counties
The foliage map indicates little change expected over the next week. If you live in any of these counties and can see the leaves changing, let us know!
