Herkimer County Historical Society Announces Exciting Summer Programs

HERKIMER, NY — The Herkimer County Historical Society invites the community to explore local history, discover family roots, and enjoy engaging presentations throughout July and August. From hands-on genealogy assistance to fascinating stories of local people, places, and events, this summer’s programs offer something for history enthusiasts of all ages.

Genealogy Workshop

Tuesday, July 21 | 6:00–8:00 p.m.

Have you always wanted to start your family tree but weren’t sure where to begin? Have you hit a roadblock in your research? The Herkimer County Historical Society’s researchers are ready to help.

Participants are encouraged to bring their genealogy questions, laptops or tablets if desired, and login information for genealogy websites.

Admission is $5 for non-members and free for Historical Society members.

Ellen Clapsaddle: The Woman Behind the Postcards

Saturday, August 1 | 2:00 p.m.

You may recognize her name or have seen her famous postcards—but do you know Ellen Clapsaddle’s remarkable story?

Author Pamela McColl shares the life, accomplishments, and personal tragedy of one of America’s most celebrated postcard illustrators, whose artwork became known around the world.

1890: Ilion’s Biggest Fire

Wednesday, August 5 | 6:00 p.m.
406 North Main Street, Herkimer

History comes alive as presenter Mike Disotelle recounts the devastating Great Ilion Fire of 1890. In only a few hours, flames consumed much of the village, forever changing its future. Learn about the people affected, the buildings lost, and the resilience of a community determined to rebuild.

Stella’s Stories

Wednesday, August 12 | 6:00 p.m.

Discover the extraordinary life of Stella Maksuta, a resilient Ukrainian widow whose memories preserve the traditions, hardships, humor, and faith of rural Upstate New York.

Through an unlikely friendship with a young neighbor, Stella’s heartfelt stories offer a moving celebration of resilience, community, and the enduring power of storytelling.

The Coast Guard’s Greely Grenadiers

Tuesday, August 26 | 6:00 p.m.

Experience the inspiring story of the Coast Guard’s Greely Grenadiers, whose music lifted the spirits of soldiers aboard a World War II troop ship.

Drawing from military records and personal letters, this presentation explores a compelling story of music, love, sacrifice, and the enduring bonds that carried service members and their families through wartime.

Historic Corners Tour

Thursday, August 27 | Noon

Step back in time during a guided walking tour of some of Herkimer’s most significant historic landmarks, including the Reformed Dutch Church, the 1834 Herkimer Jail, and the Suiter House.

Along the way, visitors will hear captivating stories about a Tiffany wall, the German Palatines, notorious murderers, and a local physician whose legacy helped shape the community.

3rd Annual Craft & Vendor Fair

In addition to its summer programming, the Herkimer County Historical Society is now accepting vendor and crafter applications for its 3rd Annual Craft & Vendor Fair, scheduled for Saturday, November 7. Vendors offering handcrafted goods, artisan products, and unique merchandise are encouraged to apply. To request an application, email herkimerhistory@yahoo.com today.
