Herkimer County Historical Society: October Events Announcement
The Herkimer County Historical Society has plenty of fun and informative events this month! As a nonprofit organization, the Herkimer County Historical Society began taking shape in 1895 with the objectives of “among other things, the discovery, collection, preservation and publishing of the history, historical records and data of and relating to that portion of the State of New York formerly known as Tryon County, and later as Herkimer County.”
Today, the Herkimer County Historical Society relies on community support by offering the community events, memberships, donations, gift shop orders, and so much more. Take a look at what’s coming this month!
Roots and Research Genealogy Course
Wednesdays, October 10, 17, 24; November 7, 14, 21, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
The cost for this informative course is $60 with Ancestry membership or $80 includes a 6-week Ancestry Membership (class size is limited to 12 participants). This six-week course is perfect for advanced beginners to intermediate genealogists looking to enhance their research skills.
Murder Mystery: Curtains for Frangelica
October 12, 5:30 p.m. (Dinner), 6:00 p.m. (Search Begins)
Join the Herkimer County Historical Society at the Herkimer Elks, 124 Mary St. , Herkimer, for an interactive evening of mystery and fun as we search for the missing Frangelica! Dinner will be served, making it a great social event.
Watercolor Painting Class
Monday, October 14, 5:30 p.m.
Enjoy a creative evening led by local artist Vicki. The cost is $25 with all supplies included. There is limited seating—reservations required. No prior experience is necessary!
Brooks’ BBQ Chicken Dinner
Friday, October 18, 3:30 p.m.
Support HCHS while enjoying a delicious BBQ dinner! Tickets are available in advance. Drive-thru pickup ONLY at 320 North Prospect Street. Tickets are required for pick-up.
Book Talk: American Community by Mark Ferrara
October 30, 2024 at 6 p.m.
Explore the rich history of intentional communities in America with Mark Ferrara’s thought-provoking discussion, “AMERICAN COMMUNITY-Radical Experiments in Intentional Living.” This discussion will be held at the Historical Society’s Eckler Building at 406 N. Main St, Herkimer.
Mainstream notions of the “American Dream” usually revolve around the ownership of private property, a house of one’s own. Yet for the past 400 years, a large number of Americans have dared to dream bigger and bolder, choosing to live in intentional communities that pooled resources, and they worked to ensure the well being of an their members.
Fall Raffle – Drawing Date: November 9
Get your tickets for this year’s Fall Raffle with the drawing taking place at the Herkimer County Historical Society’s Fall Craft Fair. The craft fair begins at 9:00 a.m on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the Herkimer VFW located at 410 Mohawk Street, Herkimer NY.

- 1st Prize: Handmade Crocheted Quilt (approx. 6ft x 6ft)
- 2nd Prize: Handmade Crocheted Throw and Pillow Tickets: $5 each or 3 for $10.
