History happens on Mohawk Valley Today

The Mohawk Valley’s long history is rooted in the Hodinöhsö:ni’ culture as it shaped the European settlers’ experience leaving a lasting legacy on the region. In the early 1700s, Palatine Germans traveling up the Hudson from Livingston Manor made their way to Schoharie before continuing west along the Mohawk River.

In documents dated November 21, 1722, Governor Burnet wrote to the British Council of Trade and Plantations about the Palatine Germans,

“I have given them leave to purchase land…between ye present English Settlements near Fort Hunter and part of Canada, on a Creek called Canada Creek, where they will be still more immediately a barrier against the sudden incursions of the French, who made this their road when they last attacked and burn’d ye frontier town called Schenectady.”

Mohawk Valley Today’s History Program on MohawkValleyMuseums.us

The Mohawk Valley is uniquely historically relevant to the development of our nation, beginning with the struggle for independence through the development of the Erie Canal as the Gateway to the West. Our site at MohawkValleyMuseums.us is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history, museums, historic sites, historical societies, and culture of the region.

Mohawk Valley Museums and Historical Societies

Our museums keep our region’s history alive with reenactments, open houses, special programs and events, educational workshops, presentations and so much more. They provide valuable resources and a wealth of knowledge to provide context for the continuing unfolding of our story. At Mohawk Valley Today, we work hard to share all that our museums and historical societies offer and how we can all learn more about this historic region. In fact we created a site dedicated to Mohawk Valley History! On this site, you’ll find history resources along with historic locations, photos, exhibits and programs. If you know of a historical society or museum that you would like to see on our site, please let us know and we’ll be happy to include your favorite historic location!

Historic homes, places and sites

With so much history in the region, we set out to plot all of the locations on the National Register of Historic Places–and we did just that. Our maps show folks which locations are close by and how easy they are to visit. If you’d like to see a historic location or site added to our map, please tell us about it!

Mohawk Valley Writing Series

At Mohawk Valley Museums, we offer a place for communities and counties to tell their story. Our Mohawk Valley Writing Series is available for all historical societies, museums and historians in the six-county region. We are honored to include in our writing series Darren Bonaparte’s Wampum Chronicles. Darren Bonaparte is a cultural historian from the Akwesasne First Nation. He is a frequent lecturer at schools, universities, museums, and historical sites in the United States and Canada.
