MVEDD Homesteading Workshop: Around the House

MVEDD’s Around the House workshop will focus on greener landscaping practices, composting and more.  If raining, the workshop will meet at the Amsterdam Library (28 Church Street).

“Backyards are ecosystems, and provide us with space to recycle nutrients and curate a diverse and productive lawn and garden. Composting is nature’s way of recycling, and MVEDD is excited to partner with Grow Amsterdam NY to help Mohawk Valley residents compost successfully at home. This event is our second Homesteading Workshop, and we will be providing information on how to increase the resiliency of your own backyard without damaging the natural systems in place. Bring your questions and your enthusiasm!”

Get ready to dive into topics that are sure to help around the house such as

• Composting – MVEDD & Grow Amsterdam NY will present basic composting information: how composting works, getting the right “recipe,” and a demonstration of how you can set up your bin at home.
• Vermicomposting – Don’t have a backyard? No problem! You can compost inside your home with a worm bucket! Worms are very efficient composters and you can reduce food waste going into the landfill by feeding them your kitchen scraps. For anyone interested, we will be giving worm buckets away at this event for you to take home!
• Greener Landscaping – Modern landscaping practices (using gas powered equipment and synthetic chemicals for weed and pest control) can destroy the natural systems in place in your backyard. MVEDD will provide information about maintaining lawns with natural alternatives, aiding in the productivity of your lawn & green spaces without harming the environment.
