Visit Montgomery County Debuts New Tourism Kiosks
Part of Larger Initiative to Promote Local Attractions
FORT PLAIN, N.Y. — Visit Montgomery County officially unveiled three new tourism kiosks this week, celebrating a project designed to help travelers and locals alike discover the many historic, cultural, and recreational opportunities throughout the county.
The ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday, June 11Â at 35 Main Street in Fort Plain, where one of the new kiosks now stands. Additional kiosks were installed and are now active in Canajoharie (at the corner of Little Mohawk and Church Streets) and St. Johnsville (51 West Main Street), with each location chosen for its high visibility and proximity to popular destinations along the Mohawk River and Erie Canal. Another kiosk will be installed in the village of Fonda later this summer.
“These kiosks are part of our commitment to boosting tourism and supporting our local communities,” Montgomery County Executive Pete Vroman said. “We want people to get out, explore, and experience everything that makes Montgomery County such a special place to visit-and these kiosks help make that easier.”
Kiosks highlight local eateries, outdoor spaces, historic sites, and seasonal events
Each kiosk highlights local eateries, outdoor spaces, historic sites, and seasonal events. Positioned in walkable downtowns and near trail connections, the kiosks are designed to be a resource for spontaneous stops or planned adventures.
“The Village of Fort Plain is very pleased with the wonderful addition of the electronic kiosk,” Fort Plain Mayor Pat Hanifin said. “We appreciate Montgomery County’s commitment to promoting tourism by showcasing local eateries and points of interest.”
“The kiosk is a great addition for Wagner Square next to our Dummy Light. Bicyclists and walkers on the Erie Canal Bike Path have already used information that it highlights, Canajoharie Mayor Ron Dievendorf said.” Thank you to Montgomery County and MCBDC, especially Stephanie, Alex and Vinnie.”
Montgomery County Tourism Initiatives
The kiosks are part of a broader series of tourism initiatives rolling out this season as Montgomery County continues its efforts to attract visitors and highlight the region’s canal-era downtowns, parks and trail systems. Later this summer, bike racks/ pumps will be installed in several communities across the county to make the area more bike-friendly-an effort inspired by the City of Amsterdam’s recent “Trail Town” designation, with the Village of Canajoharie currently working toward the same recognition.
“This is a way to bring our tourism strategy to life at the local level,” Director of Communications and Tourism Morgan McClary said. “Especially during the Erie Canal’s 200th anniversary, it’s important that we continue to elevate our communities, promote our small businesses, and showcase the deep history that’s shaped this region.”
