Mohawk Valley Featured Farm: Free Flow Farm
One of the many benefits of living in the Mohawk Valley is the abundance of local farmers’ markets, farms and farm stores within a short drive from where you live. The ability to buy fresh local produce directly from the farmer who grew it is more common in the Mohawk Valley than in many parts of the country. As the growing season continues into summer, a wider variety of fresh produce comes into season. We encourage you to buy local and visit farms located near you in our region. This week, we are so excited to highlight featured Mohawk Valley Farm – Free Flow Farm!
About Free Flow Farm
Free Flow Farm is a local vegetable and produce farm located in Herkimer County. The farm is owned by Pooniel Healy and her husband Scott. They weren’t originally looking seriously at buying anything, but once they were on the property they both knew it was what they had been always looking for. Pooniel and Scott have been there six years now and they both feel a deep connection to the land, the area, and all of nature. “The name Free Flow Farm was born out of the free and easy way our relationship has always felt to us, and still feels to this day.”
In their own words,
Our farm is not just a vegetable, herb and flower farm. It is a refuge for our souls and for the many animals that reside here. It is our happy place where we feel our best. We express our gratitude for it everyday.
We have three Garlic varieties for sale:
- Music is a porcelain, hard-neck variety, an excellent keeper (up to a year in a cool, dry spot) with 5-6 very large cloves which makes it easy to peel. The flavor is a mild/medium heat with delicious taste, used for roasting, sautéing and raw eating. It caramelizes to perfection.
- Italian Purple is a rocambole, hard-neck variety, and does not keep as long as Music, but will keep up to 9 months in a cool, dry spot. It’s flavor has more heat than Music with a stronger “zip” to it. Great for raw eating and sautéing.
- Calabria is an heirloom Rocambole variety considered the premier garlic of Italy. Extremely rich flavor but it can be difficult to grow. It’s a Northern garlic that needs cold winters. This garlic will keep up to 6 months in a cool, dry space.
Fresh Flowers
Our fresh cut flowers are also in full swing. At the markets and festivals customers can choose flowers for their own bouquet from the bouquet bar we provide.
Did you know…
Pooniel’s paternal Grandmother grew up ½ mile from where they are now and she feels like her grandmother was calling her home when they bought this farm.
