It is wonderful to enjoy Springtime in the the Mohawk Valley in Upstate New York! With warmer weather and bulbs popping up, it is easy to feel good about getting out and about this weekend! Remember to stock up on fresh produce at the Oneonta Winter Farmers’ Market, Oneida County Public Market and the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market. The Iroquois Museum has several upcoming events and exhibitions that run from April 3 until November 2025 Special Exhibitions on View April 3 through November 30

Special Event: Front Entrance Ribbon Cutting

Join us for a public ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, April 4, 10:30 a.m., to celebrate the Museum’s new reception area and shop! This project was made possible by generous funding from The Nicholas Juried Foundation and completed by Larry Gribben and his outstanding team at L. Gribben Woodworks.

Once a Tree: Continuity, Creativity, and Connection

Once a Tree: Continuity, Creativity, and Connection” explores the deep-rooted significance of trees in Haudenosaunee culture, tradition, and creative expression. Featuring the work of 42 artists and more than 100 objects—including decorative and utilitarian baskets, cradleboards, snowshoes, ladles, lacrosse sticks, toys, instruments, carvings, and sleds—this exhibition highlights the important relationship between nature and artistry. Event runs through out this weekend.

Separated but Unbroken: The Haudenosaunee Boarding School Experience

Separated but Unbroken: The Haudenosaunee Boarding School Experience” explores the lasting impact of the Thomas Indian School, once located on the Cattaraugus Reservation south of Buffalo, NY, and The Mohawk Institute near Branford, Ontario. These institutions, which enrolled a significant number of Haudenosaunee students, were part of a larger system that sought to erase Indigenous identities while deeply shaping the lives of those who endured them. Co-curated by Erin Keaton (Mohawk), the exhibition sheds light on Haudenosaunee resilience. Event runs through out this weekend.

Free Spring Break Drop in Crafts

The Old Forge Library, located at 220 Crosby Blvd., is excited to announce a special two-week series of family-friendly drop-in arts and crafts activities during the upcoming Spring Break. Crafting sessions will run from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, from March 31 to April 11. The library will welcome participants of all ages to explore their creativity and make fun, handmade projects. The best part? All materials and supplies are provided free of charge, and the sessions are open to all ages. Ilion Little Theatre “Prescription: Murder”

The Ilion Little Theater hosts multiple performances this weekend of “Prescription: Murder” . Tickets are on sale for performances this weekend at the Ilion Little Theatre. This original stage production provided the inspiration for the TV series Columbo. The theatrical predecessor Prescription: Murder, tells the story of a brilliant psychiatrist and his mistress who hatch a plot to murder his neurotic, possessive wife. Breakfast with the Easter Bunny! CPR and First Aid Certification Class

CPR and First Aid Certification Class with certified instructor, Nia Tormey, will instruct up to eight students for a free CPR, First Aid and Certification Class at the Old Forge Library, 220 Crosby Blvd. on Saturday, April 5 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. CPR, AED & and Basic Life Saving skills, as well as opioid education and a brief Narcan training will be included. The class size is limited to 8 participants, so pre-registration is required. If the class is full, the library staff will put you on a waiting list. Blacksmithing for Beginners

Blacksmithing for Beginners on Saturday, April 5, 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
$110 members; $120 non-members. (Includes materials and lunch)

In this introductory workshop, participants will have an opportunity to forge their very own fire-starting tool in the historic Field Blacksmith Shop. The style of these tools will be based on common historic examples found throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The workshop will cover the basics of blacksmithing including use of hand tools, starting and operating the forge, proper heating of steel, as well as quenching steel to harden it. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy leather boots or shoes as well as natural fiber clothing such as cotton or wool. Tools, materials, and safety equipment will be provided. Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts Events

Opening Artist Reception for Garlyn MaGinnis

The Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts host an opening reception on Saturday, April 5, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at MVCA in Canal place, Little Falls, NY. Garlyn MaGinnis is a contemporary abstract landscape painter. Her passion for painting began in early childhood, first inspired by her mother, who was also an artist. Garlyn graduated with honors from The College of Saint Rose in 1993 with a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design. After college she worked as a historic site interpreter and a stained glass artisan.

Garlyn MaGinnis Exhibit

The Mohawk Valley Center of the Arts Garlyn MaGinnis Exhibit runs from April 6 until April 25 during normal open hours of MVCA.

Zoom Writer’s Workshop Series at the Old Forge Library

The Old Forge Library will hold a  Writer’s Workshop via Zoom on Sundays March 23- April 13 from 11:30 am to 1 pm. Gabrielle Esposito will lead the 4-session workshop. Each class lasts 1.5 hours, and there is always ample time for participants to share their work and receive constructive feedback. All the necessary educational materials for each session will be provided.

Farmers’ Markets

Get fresh vegetables, honey and more at the Oneida County Public Market from 9:00 a.m until 1:00 p.m. at Union Station located at 321 Main Street, Utica, Oneonta Winter Farmers Marketfrom 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturdays at Foothills located at 24 Market Street, and at the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Don’t forget to have fun during the “Hardy Locavore” challenge to reward shoppers at its Winter Saturday Markets. By shopping 10 times at the farmers’ market between January 11 and April 26, people will receive a free cotton canvas box tote.
