NYS Citizen Preparedness Corps to Offer FREE “Emergency Preparedness Program” Wednesday May 10th, 2023, at 7pm

The Fort Herkimer Amateur Radio Assoc, Inc. in conjunction with James Wallace, Herkimer County Administrator and John Raymond (W2RJO), Herkimer County Director of Emergency Services, announce The New York State Citizen Preparedness Corps Training.

This Free training session will take place on Wednesday, May 10th, 2023 at the Town of German Flatts Community Center, 555 State Route 5S,  Mohawk, New York 13407 at  7:00 pm. The event is FREE and open to the public.

The Citizen Preparedness Corps give residents the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. Citizen Preparedness Corps training began in February 2014 and is held at armories and other locations, such as the Town of German Flatts Community Center. These training sessions are led by members of the New York National Guard, working with experts from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Emergency Management and Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

All training sessions are coordinated with local county emergency management personnel. The training course will provide an introduction to responding to a natural or man-made disaster. Participants will be advised on how to properly prepare for any disaster, including developing a family emergency plan and stocking up on emergency supplies.

A key component of this training is distribution of free NYS Disaster Preparedness Kits to all participants (one per family) containing key items to assist individuals in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. These Starter Kits Contain: Plastic drop cloth, Light stick, D Batteries, First Aid Kit, Face mask, Safety goggles, AM/FM pocket radio w/batteries, packs of drinking water, food bars, Regular flashlight, Emergency blanket, Duct tape, Work gloves, and a Water bottle. These kits will help New Yorkers be the most-trained and best-prepared citizens in the country.

Often during an emergency, electricity, water, heat, air conditioning or telephone service may not work. All New Yorkers should have this training and at least some basic supplies on hand in order for your family to survive if an emergency occurs.
